“In Death I Linger” On Single Cover

The title of Black Halo’s latest single, “In Death I Linger On,” captures the feeling that some survivors of sexual assault have – that something inside them has died. Whether it is hope, innocence, or a sense of safety, something precious to our sense of well-being is just gone. And that feeling of death can lead to coping strategies that result in physical death.

The moving song is at the center of Black Halo’s forthcoming debut album, Utopia, which tells the story of a man and woman struggling with their respective problems in silence. This despite a modern world that affords so many communication opportunities and social connectivity, but as songwriter and guitarist Randy Ellefson notes, so much of that has left people empty.

“It’s one of the reasons I’ve personally stepped away from social media,” he says, “except for promotional activities for my books and music. It isn’t good for my mental or emotional health, and it’s part of why I wrote the whole album about it.”

In case of the fictional woman on the album, the result of poor coping and fear of speaking out about her trauma is tragic. Guest vocalist Bec Hollcraft gives a powerful performance as the unnamed female, whose fate accelerates the man’s downward spiral.

The song also features Dirk Verbeuren, known for his powerhouse drumming in bands like Megadeth and Soilwork. But here he gives the more subdued performance the song requires. The song is available on all streaming media on December 11, 2025.

Black Halo Bio

“Darkness falls, and I can hear your screams.”

The line from Black Halo’s “Darkness Falls” sums up the topics of their debut album, Utopia, and the band’s own struggles to get it recorded. Hard rock bands are known for songs about fast cars and even faster women, but Black Halo is tackling the troubles of our modern world head-on instead. Deep fakes. Substance abuse. Hatemongers. Depression. Isolation. The thought-provoking concept album follows two similarly troubled people whose demons threaten their dreams.

And it’s not unlike the duo behind Black Halo. When Maryland-based guitarist Randy Ellefson decided in 2009 that his fifth solo album would be the first with vocals, he had no idea singers would delay it for over fifteen years. The singers came and went one-by-one, six of them over seven years, each forcing Ellefson to start the vocals over (the rest of the album was done). One was Atlanta’s Chase Breedlove, whose personal troubles prompted his exit. Finally, Ellefson gave up.

“I honestly couldn’t take it anymore and just retired,” says Ellefson, who went on to write epic fantasy novels instead. But the project was never really forgotten. Years passed before he decided to try again, and this time, Breedlove had recovered and returned to get Utopia done. Released under the band name Black Halo, it’s still mostly Ellefson’s affair, but it’s a second chance for both men – maybe the same second chance their audience and the album’s main character seek. For Ellefson and Breedlove, the darkness has fallen and now there’s only the scream of triumph.

Lyrics

Music and lyrics by Randy Ellefson

Verse

I’ll die before my time or so I have been told
The hands to comfort me instead have left me cold
The walls I built since then are killing me somehow
Your touch could save me, but no one can touch me now

Chorus

As I leave you, don’t you cry
There is time for me to fly
Come away from this land of wrongs
Where in death I linger on

Verse

Too young for lust I was an object of desire
No justice found when all think I am a liar
I didn’t mean for you to hear the truth this way
I didn’t mean to leave the world and you today

Chorus

As I leave you, don’t you cry
There is time for me to fly
Come away from this land of wrongs
Where in death I linger on

Verse

The darkness in my heart left no place for the light
The poison in my veins has robbed me of the fight
I should’ve told you when I had a heart to try
You could’ve heard my cries

Chorus

As I leave you, don’t you cry
There is time for me to fly
Come away from this land of wrongs
Where in death I lingered on

Ending

I said no
I said no
I said no
I said no
